What Is a Strategic Tax Review?

A strategic tax review is a comprehensive analysis of your current tax situation across all the key variables: entity structure, income sources, deductions, elections, retirement contributions, and compliance gaps. Unlike a tax return, which looks backward at what already happened, a strategic tax review looks forward.

It answers the question every business owner should be asking: given where I am right now, what should I do differently going forward?

Watch: What a Real Tax Strategy Looks Like

The Core Problem

Most Business Owners Have Never Had a Real Tax Strategy. Most CPAs Have Never Given Them One.

Filing a return and building a tax strategy are two completely different things. A return tells the IRS what happened. A strategy determines what should happen next.

Many business owners have worked with the same CPA for years and have never had a conversation about entity elections, income timing, compensation structure, or the long-term tax impact of how they are holding their assets. A strategic tax review starts that conversation and identifies exactly where the money is going and where it does not have to.

Most tax savings come from decisions made before the year ends, not on the return
Entity elections, retirement plan selection, and income timing are planning decisions, not filing decisions
A strategic review identifies gaps in your current structure before they cost you more
We provide a written summary of findings and recommended actions
One review often pays for itself in the first year

Common Questions

Strategic Tax Review FAQ

CPAs are primarily compliance professionals. They file accurate returns. A strategic tax review is a planning engagement: we look at your structure and ask whether it is the right one and what changes would save you money going forward. Most CPAs do not offer this as a separate service.
Typically your last two to three years of business and personal tax returns, your current entity documents, and a summary of your income and major expenses. We will tell you exactly what we need when we schedule.
Most strategic reviews are completed within two to three weeks of receiving your documents. We then schedule a meeting to walk through the findings.
No. The review is a deliverable in itself. You receive the findings and decide which, if any, actions you want to take. There is no obligation to hire us for implementation.
Annually is ideal, or whenever you have a significant change in your business: new revenue milestone, new entity, major asset purchase or sale, change in ownership, or a planned exit.
